Getting from Houston Airport to Texas Medical Center

Texas Medical Center (TMC) is the largest medical complex in the world, covering 2.1 square miles in the heart of Houston. It includes over 60 institutions — MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston Methodist, Texas Children’s Hospital, Memorial Hermann, and dozens more.

Patients and families traveling to TMC from out of town almost always arrive through IAH or HOU airports. This guide tells you exactly how to get there, how long it takes, and what to expect.

Distance and Travel Times

From IAH to Texas Medical Center:

  • Distance: 22 miles
  • Travel time: 25–40 minutes (non-rush hour)
  • Travel time: 45–70 minutes (rush hour: 7–9 AM, 4–7 PM weekdays)

From HOU to Texas Medical Center:

  • Distance: 8 miles
  • Travel time: 15–25 minutes (non-rush hour)
  • Travel time: 25–40 minutes (rush hour)

Transportation Options

Pre-Booked Private Taxi (Most Recommended)

For medical travel, a pre-booked taxi is strongly recommended. Medical appointments often come with high stress and precise timing. Knowing your driver is waiting when you land — regardless of flight delays — removes one major source of anxiety.

  • IAH to Texas Medical Center: From $85.00 fixed rate
  • HOU to Texas Medical Center: From $85.00 fixed rate

Rideshare (Uber/Lyft)

Rideshare is available but less predictable. During rush hour and rainy weather (common in Houston), surge pricing significantly increases costs. For medical travel where timing matters, the unpredictability is a significant drawback.

METRO Light Rail

The Houston METRO Red Line connects Downtown Houston to the Texas Medical Center with a stop at the main TMC campus. From IAH, you’d need to take a bus or taxi to Downtown first, then transfer to the Red Line. This route takes 90+ minutes total and involves multiple transfers — not practical for patients with luggage or mobility limitations.

Navigating Texas Medical Center

TMC is enormous. Before arriving, know the exact name and address of the specific hospital or clinic you’re visiting. Common destinations include:

  • MD Anderson Cancer Center: 1515 Holcombe Blvd, Houston, TX 77030
  • Houston Methodist Hospital: 6565 Fannin St, Houston, TX 77030
  • Texas Children’s Hospital: 6621 Fannin St, Houston, TX 77030
  • Memorial Hermann TMC: 6400 Fannin St, Houston, TX 77030
  • UTHealth / UT Physicians: 6400 Fannin St, Houston, TX 77030

💡 PRO TIP

Tell your taxi driver the specific hospital name and building. TMC has multiple entrances and hospital-specific drop-off points that make a significant difference to patients with limited mobility.

Parking at Texas Medical Center

TMC has extensive parking garages, but parking costs $15–25 per day. If you’re making multiple visits over several days, a pre-booked taxi service is frequently cheaper than daily parking — especially from HOU where the taxi fare is under 85.00

Returning from TMC to Houston Airport

The Houston Taxi can pick you up directly from any TMC hospital. Book your return trip in advance to guarantee availability — especially for early morning hospital departures for catches of early flights.
