How to Book an Airport Taxi in Houston (Step by Step)

Home / Uncategorized How to Book an Airport Taxi in Houston (Step by Step)

Why Pre-Booking Your Houston Airport Taxi Matters

Houston is a massive city. George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) is 23 miles from Downtown Houston, and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) is about 10 miles south of the city center. Without a pre-booked taxi, you’re either waiting in a rideshare queue — which at peak times can stretch 30–45 minutes — or scrambling for a cab that may not be available.

Pre-booking a Houston airport taxi takes less than 2 minutes and guarantees your driver is waiting when you land. Here’s exactly how to do it.

Step 1: Choose Your Pickup Airport

Houston has two main airports:

  • IAH (George Bush Intercontinental Airport) — Located in north Houston, IAH handles most major international and domestic flights. Address: 2800 N Terminal Rd, Houston, TX 77032.
  • HOU (William P. Hobby Airport) — Located in south Houston, HOU serves Southwest Airlines and several other carriers. Address: 7800 Airport Blvd, Houston, TX 77061.

Know which airport your flight lands at before booking. The two airports are about 30 miles apart, so drivers cannot easily swap between them.

Step 2: Enter Your Drop-Off Location

Common Houston taxi drop-off destinations include:

  • Downtown Houston — most popular business and hotel district
  • The Woodlands — major suburb 30 miles north of IAH
  • Sugar Land / Katy — southwest Houston suburbs
  • Galveston Cruise Port — popular for cruise passengers (75 miles from IAH)
  • Texas Medical Center — one of the world’s largest medical complexes
  • College Station / Texas A&M — 100 miles northwest of Houston

Enter your full address for the most accurate price quote. If you’re going to a hotel, the hotel name is usually enough.

Step 3: Select Your Vehicle

The Houston Taxi offers several vehicle types depending on your group size and budget:

  • Regular Sedan — $2/mile, fits up to 4 passengers with 2 bags
  • Comfy Ride SUV — $2.50/mile, fits up to 6 passengers with 4 bags
  • Prime Van / Galveston Shuttle — $3/mile, fits up to 10 passengers with 8 bags
  • Executive Ride — $3/mile, premium vehicle for corporate travelers

💡 PRO TIP

If you have more than 2 large suitcases, book the SUV even if you’re traveling alone. Houston taxis have specific luggage limits per vehicle class.

Step 4: Pick Your Date and Time

Always book at least 2–3 hours before your flight lands for airport pickups. For early morning flights (before 7 AM) or late night arrivals (after 10 PM), book the night before to guarantee availability.

For Galveston cruise port shuttles, book 48 hours in advance — especially on Sundays when cruise ships depart en masse.

Step 5: Enter Your Flight Number

This is the most important step many passengers skip. Providing your flight number allows your driver to monitor your flight in real time. If your flight is delayed by 2 hours, your driver adjusts automatically. You won’t be charged for the wait, and you won’t arrive to find your driver has left.

Step 6: Confirm and Pay

Houston taxi bookings can be paid online by card (Visa, Mastercard, Amex), Google Pay, Apple Pay, or in cash to the driver. Online payment gives you instant email confirmation and a receipt.

Step 7: Meet Your Driver

At IAH, drivers meet passengers at the Ground Transportation area on the lower level of each terminal. Look for a driver holding a sign with your name. At HOU, the pickup area is outside baggage claim on the lower level.

What Happens If My Flight Is Delayed?

If you booked through The Houston Taxi and provided your flight number, nothing happens — we handle it automatically. Your driver monitors the flight and arrives when you land, not when you were originally scheduled to land. No extra charges apply for flight delays.

💡 PRO TIP

Always save your driver’s phone number from the booking confirmation. If you can’t find your driver, call directly — don’t waste time searching.

How Far in Advance Should I Book?

  • Same-day bookings: Possible if drivers are available, but not guaranteed
  • 2–3 hours ahead: Recommended minimum for standard airport pickups
  • 24–48 hoursahead: Recommended for group bookings, Galveston shuttles, and early morning/late night pickups
  • 1 week ahead: Ideal during Houston Rodeo season (Feb–March), major conferences, and holiday weekends
